A Kanwariya died and another was critically injured in a hit-and-run near Daduanbahal, Keonjhar, while en route to a Lord Shiva Shrine. Odisha Transport Authority issued a safety advisory for pilgrims.

One Kanwariya killed, another critical in hit-and-run incident in Odisha

A Kanwariya was killed and another critically injured after being hit by an unidentified vehicle near Daduanbahal on the National Highway under Champua police limits of Keonjhar. The mishap occurred while they were on their way to offer water at a Lord Shiva Shrine. The unidentified vehicle, reportedly, rammed into the pickup van in which the victims were travelling.

Police Investigation Underway

Following the incident, police and ambulance personnel reached the site, recovered the deceased’s body, and shifted the injured person to Basudevpur Medical. Police have launched an investigation into the hit-and-run case and are scanning CCTV footage from surrounding areas to trace the vehicle. Efforts are also on to identify both Kanwariyas, as the critically injured individual was unable to recall his name or any other details due to the trauma of the accident.

Collision With Pickup Van

According to reports, the two Kanwariyas were travelling on a pickup van when it was hit by an unknown vehicle, resulting in one death and leaving the other grievously hurt. The precise cause of the collision is under inquiry, with officials verifying available surveillance footage and local inputs.

Transport Authority Issues Advisory

In the wake of the incident, the State Transport Authority, Odisha, has issued a safety advisory for Kanwariyas, aimed at promoting secure travel practices during the pilgrimage:

  • Prioritise safe travel while going to collect water.

  • Walk only on footpaths meant for pedestrians and move in close groups.

  • Cross roads with extreme caution, ensuring no vehicles are approaching.

  • Wear retro-reflective tape on arms to be visible at night.

  • Walk in a straight line to improve visibility to drivers.

  • Never walk or stop in the middle of the road.

  • Use torchlight when walking at night.

  • Rest when tired and resume journey only when refreshed.

Authorities have urged Kanwariyas to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
