Odisha has seen a significant rise in cyber frauds with 2,394 cases reported from January to June 2024. The total fraud amount is around Rs 36 crore. Police have frozen Rs 9.5 crore and returned Rs 46 lakh to victims. The majority of these crimes involved UPI transactions, social media, parcel deliveries, and SIM KYC.

While both central and state government agencies are trying to combat the rising cybercrime in the country, Odisha witnessed a staggering rise in cyber frauds, reports said. At least 2,394 cases of cyber fraud have been reported from different parts of the state in just six months.

During the last six months from January to June 2024, 2,394 cases have been reported in several police stations with the fraud amount rising to around Rs 36 crore, informed Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda.

Police have managed to freeze Rs 9.5 crore and returned Rs 46 lakh to the victims while the other victims are waiting for their money to be recovered.

As per the CP, most of the cyber fraud cases have occurred through UPI fraud, social media, parcel delivery, credit card delivery, and sending messages about SIM KYC.

Till now, the Commissionerate Police have managed to arrest 21 cyber fraudsters and produced them before court. 5 of them are members of inter-state cyber frauds, said Panda.

“The total fraud amount is around Rs 36 crore in the last six months. We have managed to freeze 9.5 crore and returned around Rs 46 lakh to the victims. Maximum frauds are committed through UPI transactions, parcel delivery, SIM KYC and social media,” informed CP Panda.
