Himansu Shekhar Rout

Days after a youth identified as Bhabani Rout and his friend Manoranjan Mohapatra were killed by contract killers engaged by Bhabani's elder brother and sister-in-law, the people of Kansa village under Nilagiri Police limits of Balasore reportedly ostracised the family of the accused couple.

The boycott of the family was reportedly done as a punishment for their heinous crime four days after a group of women approached the local police and demanded that the family of the accused be driven out.

Meanwhile, the villagers raised a fence in front of the accused couple's house in a bid to prevent the accused from entering the village if they ever returned from jail.

Nilamani Rout, a villager said, "Women had demanded the police to drive out the family from the village. They also told police that the couple would not be allowed in the village.  As nothing happened, they excommunicated the family.”

He also added, "The villagers fear if the couple can murder their own family members they can kill others too.”

Police during the investigation found that Rout’s elder brother and his wife hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Bhabani over a land dispute. Later Police cracked the case and arrested the couple along with the contract killers.

Nilagiri SDPO Saroj Kumar Upadhaya said that police are alerted about it and warned of legal action if the law is taken into hands.
