In what could be termed as a miraculous escape in the triple train crash at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, a 16-year-old boy got a new lease of life after he decided to have dinner with his parents who were sitting in another coach of the train he was travelling.

According to sources, one Ezekiel Das of Berhampur along with his wife Sumita Das and son George Jaccob Das had boarded Coromandel Express on the fateful day.

While Ezekiel and his wife were assigned seats in B2 coach, their son got his seat in B8 coach. When the train left the station and was about to reach Balasore, parents of George called him to come to their coach for having dinner together.

Getting a call from his parents, George went to the B2 coach moments before the crash. Fortunately, the B2 coach remained unaffected in the accident involving three trains and the trio escaped unhurt.

Narrating his experience George said, “I ordered food at Cuttack station at around 7 pm. We heard a loud sound between 7.05 pm and 7.10 pm. And, everything changed within 10 seconds. I was just praying the coach does not get overturned. After the train stopped, my father got down from the train and asked us to get down as well. When we came out of the train, we found coaches were lying here and there. But luckily we escaped unhurt.”

“While I and my wife were assigned our berths in B2, my son got his berth in B8 coach. At first, I was planning to sit in the B8 coach but suddenly I changed my mind and went to B2. Though we trio escaped unhurt in the accident, people sitting in other coaches sustained grievous injuries and many of them even died,” said Ezekiel Das.

“We were in B2 coach when we heard a horrifying loud sound. Moments later, we realised that a major accident has happened. I was shivering. I cannot express that terrific experience in words. I thank God for saving us from such a terrible accident,” said Sumita.
