Following the tragic train mishap at Bahanaga in Odisha’s Balasore, the Union Railways Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the kin of the deceased.

Similarly, Rs 2 Lakh compensation has been announced for the grievously injured persons and Rs 50,000 for persons with minor injuries.

After the mishap, Vaishnaw rushed to the accident site. He tweeted, “My prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured and condolences to the bereaved families. Rescue teams mobilised from Bhubaneswar and Kolkata. NDRF, State govt. teams mobilised. Will take all hands required for the rescue ops.”

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force has been pressed into action to help in rescue operations, informed Vaishnaw.

Till the filing of this report, more than 50 passengers were killed and many more were critically injured after two express trains derailed near Balasore's Bahanaga.

As per the information by the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Kharagpur, the Shalimar-Howrah Coromandel Express (12841) was derailed at Bahanaga station at around 6:51pm and soon after, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast (12864) train derailed at the same spot at 6:55pm.
