Odisha to bring new Boat Rules for cargo operations & tourism

Odisha government is all set to bring new regulations under the Boat Rules for cargo operations and tourism.

As per reports, Odisha will bring the policy following the directives of the Centre.

The new regulations are aimed at revolutionising cargo operations through waterways and giving a boost to tourism. Moreover, solar-powered electric boats will be introduced in Chilika Lake to ferry tourists. The solar boats are extremely silent which will create a better ecosystem for the migratory birds in the lake.

The State government aims to save 69 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. Solar boats have a very low operational cost as compared to petrol-powered boats.

Speaking about the development, Odisha Transport and Commerce Secretary, Usha Padhi said, “It will take around two months to introduce the rules because of the procedures. But I think we will be the first State to adopt the inland vessel rules.”

“Solar boats are eco-friendly, and they do not put any adverse effects on the climate. It will help reduce pollution in Chilika. We are launching this on a trial basis. If successful, we will expand it to other rivers,” said, the Director of Ports & Inland Water Transport, Odisha, Padmalochan Roul.
