A girl student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla in Sambalpur district died after reportedly jumping off Power Channel Bridge on Tuesday night.
The student, identified as Chinmayi Priyadarshini Sahoo, had jumped off the power channel bridge on Tuesday evening. She hailed from Rampur Madanpur area in Kalahandi district.
According to sources, Chinmayi was a student of the Information Technology department of the varsity. She attended the university’s convocation programme on February 28 and received her degree.
Police sources said Chaimayi was supposed to return home by bus after the convocation ceremony. However, she had an altercation with a youth last night following which she jumped off the bridge. However, the exact reason behind her taking the extreme step was not immediately ascertained.
Following the incident, Burla police had summoned the youth for questioning. After the preliminary investigation, it was learnt that the youth is a classmate of the girl student.
The police have also seized two mobile phones from the youth to check the call records and message details.
The Fire Services department personnel had launched a search operation to trace the student soon after the incident. The search operation was resumed on Wednesday and her body was retrieved from the water body.
