Amid a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in several Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore, the Odisha government on Saturday informed that it is aware of the situation and has intensified surveillance and testing measures across the state.

The state health administration is closely monitoring the situation and has initiated discussions with the World Health Organization (WHO) to assess the risks and prepare accordingly.

Odisha In Touch With Health Ministry

Speaking to the media, Nilakantha Mishra, Director of Public Health, Odisha, stated that the state government is in regular contact with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and is following all guidelines and advisories issued by the Centre and global health agencies.

“We were also discussing with the WHO. We have no information about any new variant of COVID-19. As antibodies are reducing, COVID-19 cases have risen, and some deaths have also been reported outside. In India, no special alert has been issued so far. We are in contact with the government of India. Whatever guideline or information we receive, we will share with the public,” said Mishra.

Though there have been no positive COVID-19 cases reported in Odisha for a long time, we are maintaining strict vigilance. Testing is being actively carried out at district headquarters hospitals, medical colleges, and other government health institutions,” he said.

No Evidence of New Variant

Officials confirm that while there is no evidence of a new variant behind the recent surge, medical experts suggest the infections could be a result of declining immunity levels and reduced antibodies in individuals, which makes them vulnerable even to older strains of the virus.

The Health Department has also emphasized the importance of early detection and has ensured the availability of testing kits, isolation beds, and oxygen support in key healthcare facilities. Training sessions and reviews are being conducted at district levels to ensure preparedness in case of a sudden spike.

Govt Urges People to Remain Alert

The government has urged people, especially those with travel history to affected countries, to remain alert and report any symptoms immediately. Citizens are also advised to continue basic safety practices such as wearing masks in crowded places, maintaining hand hygiene, and avoiding unnecessary gatherings.

The Odisha government has assured the public that there is no need to panic, but stressed that prevention and vigilance are key to avoiding another wave. As the global situation evolves, the state remains committed to safeguarding public health through timely action and collaborative efforts.
