Minor boy dies during uncle’s ‘shuddhi kriya’ in Kendrapara
A tragic incident unfolded at Ali Sanamang village in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on Wednesday, when a 12-year-old boy drowned in a pond. The victim, Ayushman Jena, had travelled to the village with his family to attend a relative’s shuddhikriya (purification ritual).
Following the completion of the dashah kriya (tenth-day ritual), Ayushman went to bathe in a nearby pond with his friends. While swimming, he reportedly slipped underwater and failed to resurface. As the children screamed for help, villagers rushed to the spot and began searching frantically for the boy.
After an intense search, villagers managed to pull Ayushman out and immediately rushed him to the Aul Group Health Centre. Sadly, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Speaking to reporters, a local resident who helped in the rescue said:
“He had come here with his family for the ‘shuddhi kriya’ rituals near the pond. After the rituals were over, he went to bathe. His foot slipped and he slipped deep into the water. Locals rushed to his rescue after hearing the screams of children. We pulled him out and took him to the Aul Group Health Centre. Unfortunately, doctors confirmed he had passed away. It is a very sad and unfortunate incident. I urge the administration to provide assistance and offer comfort to his grieving parents.” said Pritiranjan Ray, local resident.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the community. Heartbroken family members and neighbours gathered to console each other, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Local police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated further inquiries.
