School students falling sick in Kendrapara
As many as seven students from a school were rushed to a hospital on Thursday reportedly after falling sick. The incident was reported from a private school in Udaynagar of Kendrapara district.
As per sources, humidity and excessive heat became unbearable for the students, and the kids were taken ill while two of them also lost consciousness.
According to reports, when the parents reached the hospital after getting calls from the school, they found the kids screaming in pain and crying.
The on-duty doctor said, “Excessive heat and a lack of proper ventilation in the classroom resulted in the students falling sick but their condition is stable now. The children were administered injections, oxygen and IV drips.”
“For the last 2-3 days, there was no electricity supply in the classroom, and a generator was supposed to be installed, but that did not happen. Our teacher had instructed us to take rest if we felt sick. I was already resting when I felt a sudden pain in my chest and was unable to breathe” said Ankita, a student.
“The kids were feeling sick yesterday as well but today was extreme as 7-8 students got sick,” said a guardian.
Meanwhile, parents were upset alleging that private schools take in students beyond their capacity resulting in packed and poorly ventilated classrooms. These schools should provide better facilities to the students since they encourage the parents to enrol their children into private institutions, they said.
Unavailability of water and electricity is not expected at these schools as they provide boarding facilities, rued guardians.
This is a concerning issue as the principal of the school, the administration and the district administration are not taking any evident steps to address these problems, the parents alleged.
No official statements were received from the school’s principal or the district administration.
