Vigilance officials arrested Sarat Kumar Jena, the revenue inspector (RI) of Kenduapada revenue circle under Bonth tehsil in Bhadrak district, on Saturday, on charges of accepting bribe. 

As per reports, Jena demanded a bribe of Rs. 9,000 from a complainant to submit an inquiry report to the tehsildar regarding the conversion of paternal agricultural land to homestead land and to issue a record of rights(RoR) in his favour. The complainant intimated the matter to the Vigilance department which laid a trap. While the RI was accepting cash of Rs.9,000 in his office from the complainant, the Vigilance officials caught him red-handed.

The Vigilance department carried out simultaneous searches at his residential house at Saragadia, his native village Biripada of Bhadrak, and his office. The RI was arrested and was produced in court.

In another case, a retired employee (ACTO) of Chikiti unified check gate in Ganjam, Ramesh Chandra Behera, and his wife Mamata Behera were convicted by a Special vigilance court in a disproportionate assets case.    

The couple was earlier charge-sheeted by the Vigilance. The Special Judge of Vigilance court in Berhampur convicted the couple for possessing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs. 34,32,966. They were sentenced to 3 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 each, it was stated by the Vigilance in a press release.
