Even before noon, the mercury soared across several parts of Odisha, with Jharsuguda emerging as the hottest spot of the day so far. According to early morning readings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Jharsuguda recorded a maximum temperature of 35.2°C by 8:30 AM, raising concerns of a possible heat wave if the trend continues throughout the day.

Other western and interior districts also reported significantly high morning temperatures. Sambalpur stood close behind at 34.4°C, followed by Hirakud at 34°C. The early rise in temperatures in these areas has signalled a harsh day ahead for residents, especially daily wage workers, students, and commuters who are most exposed to the sun.

Coastal and central regions also experienced uncomfortable conditions. Baleswar recorded 33°C, while the temple town of Puri stood at 33.4°C. Rourkela registered 32.8°C, and Bhubaneswar, the state capital, was not far behind at 32.4°C.

Other notable temperature readings included Chandbali at 32.2°C, Paradip at 31.2°C, and Gopalpur — one of the relatively cooler locations — at 30.2°C.

The IMD has warned that temperature levels could rise sharply by afternoon, with several districts expected to breach the 40°C mark. Heat wave-like conditions are likely in parts of western Odisha, and people have been advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities during peak hours.

Health authorities have issued precautionary guidelines, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with existing health conditions. People have been urged to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.

With the summer intensifying and monsoon still away, residents across Odisha brace for a tough season ahead, hoping for an early respite from the scorching heat.
