In a major cash haul, Odisha Police seized a whopping cash of over Rs 55 lakh from a car at a vehicle checkpoint in Binika of Sonepur district on Saturday.

As per reports, police were checking vehicles at College Chhak in Binika. On searching a car, police recovered cash of Rs 55.20 lakh.

There were six occupants in the car which was on its way to Kakinada in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The occupants belong to Guripur in Kakinada, sources said.

Police immediately called a manager of a local bank and got the cash counted with two machines. The cash seizure came at a time when elections are around the corner.

Meanwhile, police started an investigation into the matter.

Citing that the model code of conduct is in force, the police did not divulge anything about the source of such huge cash and how the money would have been used.

The SP said that since the cash seizure is more than Rs 10 lakh, as per the norms, police are mandated to inform the Income Tax department which will conduct a detailed probe.
