For the first time, the Odisha government has decided to distribute sample question papers among Class 10 students appearing for the annual High School Certificate (HSC) or Matric Examination 2024 conducted by the Board of Secondary Education (BSE).
The Directorate of Secondary Education, Odisha has stated that the move is aimed at helping students of Class 10 understand the question patterns and enable them to prepare well for the ensuing HSC examination.
In a letter, Secondary Education Director Sushanta Kumar Das informed all the District Education Officers (DEOs) about dispatching of the sample question papers prepared as per the existing examination patterns and asked the officials to make arrangements so that the sample papers reach all the students.
“One set of sample papers each of Odia, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science and Social Sciences has been sent. There will be similar question papers in the matric examination. This sample paper will be helpful in the preparation of board exams for class 10 students,” the letter read.
The DEOs have been asked to share the sample question papers with the headmasters and headmistresses of their respective districts.
While the Education Department thinks sample papers will help the students score more in the exams, some educationists are of a different opinion.
Speaking to OTV, academician, Satyakam Mishra said, “Exams help students become more responsible. If we spoon-feed everything to the students, then the examination will lose its importance.”
“There is already a Test Examination in place for the same purpose. Test exams are conducted in Class 10 to accustom the students for the Matric exams. Teachers evaluate the students on their Test Exam scores and work on them on that basis so that the students can score better in Matric Exams. There is no need to send sample papers to students,” Mishra said.
Targeting the government, Mishra said, “The BSE is responsible for conducting exams. The Board knows best how to conduct an exam. Why is the government interfering in it by sending sample question papers to students?”
It can be noted that the Annual High School Certificate, Madhyama and State Open School Certificate Examination for 2024 will be simultaneously conducted from 20 February 2024 to 4 March 2024.
The evaluation of answer books will be conducted from 12 March 2024 and will continue for at least 12 days.
