Amid the political row over the seizure of huge amounts of cash during raids by the Income Tax department in Odisha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday brought serious allegations against the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

BJP MLA from Baripada, Prakash Soren alleged that the lion’s share of the seized cash from liquor manufacturers in Western Odisha belongs to the BJD.

“This money belongs to BJD. Like a thief never admits to stealing, BJD will never admit that this money belongs to it. This is not only liquor money, but a summation of money looted from mines too,” Soren said while speaking to reporters.

Targeting the BJD, Soren further said, “There are two types of taxes levied on the people of Odisha. One is to run the government, and the other tax is to run the party (BJD). Government officials are demanding PC in every work. There are some trusted people, with whom the cash is kept for use during election."

The BJD is yet to make any comments on Soren’s allegations.

BJP had earlier alleged that the liquor business and tax evasion have been running as a result of a nexus between the BJD and Congress.

The members of the Mahila Morcha of BJP demonstrated at the Master Canteen Square in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday by burning an effigy of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Dhiraj Sahu. They demanded a CBI probe into his links with the liquor traders and the subsequent seizure of cash.
