Odisha 'hooch' tragedy: 1 Dies, 2 Critical; 11 still under treatment at MKCG Berhampur

One of the 15 persons undergoing treatment after consuming spurious country liquor at Chikiti in Ganjam district died on Wednesday. The victim was treated at MKCG Medical College and Hospital. Two others remain critical, while 11 are still hospitalized. More than 15 people from Karbala and Jenasahi villages fell ill after consuming the liquor sold near Moundpur. Police have arrested five persons in connection with the incident.

Odisha 'hooch' tragedy: 1 dies, 2 critical; 11 still under treatment at MKCG Berhampur

One of the 15 persons undergoing treatment after consuming spurious country liquor at Chikiti in Ganjam district breathed his last on Wednesday. The victim was undergoing treatment at Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital where he died, reports said.

The deceased is from Jenasahi village in Chikita area. Meanwhile, the condition of two others still remains critical and the duo has been kept under observation in the ICU, with another 11 people still in the hospital, informed sources. As per latest reports, two are under treatment in casualty, two in ICU and 11 others in the medicine ward.

More than 15 people from Karbala and Jenasahi villages fell ill after consuming country liquor sold near Moundpur on Monday. They were admitted to Chikiti hospital after they experienced stomach ache and vomiting.

Of the 15, 14 persons were transferred to MKCG Hospital after their conditions worsened. This morning, one of them passed away while undergoing treatment, medical reports said.

Upon being informed, police and Excise Department officials conducted searches at Moundpur, Jenapur, Karala and nearby villages. It is yet to be ascertained if all of them fell ill after consuming the spurious liquor.

As many as five persons have been arrested in this connection. Meanwhile, 55Ltr of country liquor has been seized by the Excise Department officials.
