Odisha headmaster suspended for drinking alcohol on school premises
In a shocking incident, a headmaster of Sannyasipali Government Upper Primary School in Kolabira block of Jharsuguda district was suspended on Wednesday after being caught drinking alcohol on the school premises at night.
The controversy erupted after photos went viral on social media showing headmaster Upendra Patel, a member of the school management committee, and two other teachers from nearby schools consuming alcohol inside the school office.
As the visuals spread widely, the Education Department swung into action and launched an immediate investigation into the matter. Following the probe, the department confirmed the misconduct and suspended headmaster Upendra Patel.
Officials have stated that further action may be taken against others involved in the incident, as such behaviour tarnishes the image of educational institutions and sets a bad precedent for students.
Local residents have expressed anger over the incident, demanding strict monitoring and accountability to prevent such activities within school premises in the future.
Meanwhile, another headmaster in Mayurbhanj district was also placed under suspension after repeated complaints of reporting to duty in an intoxicated state and neglecting his responsibilities. The suspended official has been identified as Sanjay Kumar Jena, headmaster of Dhanpota Primary School under the Badasahi block.
According to sources, Jena had allegedly developed a habit of consuming alcohol during school hours and was frequently seen in an inebriated state on the premises. He was also absent on most working days, causing major disruption to classes and adversely affecting students' education.
