Odisha halts special bus services to Maha Kumbh until February 4

The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) on Thursday announced the suspension of all its special bus services to the Maha Kumbh Mela until February 4.

This decision has been taken considering the unforeseen circumstances at the Maha Kumbh Mela.

At least 30 people were killed and 60 others injured in a stampede that broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in the early hours of Wednesday. The pre-dawn stampede at the Sangam area of the Maha Kumbh broke out as millions of pilgrims jostled for space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya considered one of the most auspicious days during the Mela.

For passengers who have already booked their travel to the Maha Kumbh Mela, OSRTC has assured that it will provide necessary assistance and reimbursements where applicable. Travellers are encouraged to contact number 9937547773 for guidance on their next steps.

As many as eight buses were plying from Odisha to Prayagraj from January 12 in the first phase. It was decided that the bus service would continue till February 26. However, the services have now been halted until February 4.

OSRTC started the special bus service to meet the rising demand from devotees eager to take holy dips during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj this year. With bus travel often being a more economical option than trains or flights, its popularity has surged among the populace.

Recognised as one of the largest religious festivals in the world, the Maha Kumbh Mela is a significant event that attracts millions of devotees. The festival, marked by ritualistic bathing in sacred rivers, is held every 12 years in rotation among four locations, with Prayagraj being one of the prominent sites.
