A groom from Burla in Sambalpur district was picked up and detained by Bolangir police for allegedly demanding a two-wheeler as dowry on the wedding day on Thursday.

As per reports, the ‘Nikah’ of Md Shaikh Qureshi from Burla was fixed with a girl from Sriramnagarpada in Bolangir. Everything was fine until the day of marriage. After Qureshi reached the wedding venue with his baraat, he and his family demanded a two-wheeler as dowry.

The bride’s family was reportedly shocked by the sudden demand and refused to give a bike as dowry. Infuriated by the denial, the baraatis and Qureshi’s family did not eat the dinner served to them.

As per reports, the Qureshi’s had not made any demands for dowry prior to the wedding. So the bride’s family was taken aback by the sudden demand of bike and it made them agitated.

As Qureshi remained adamant on his demand, the family of the bride cancelled the wedding and lodged a complaint at the Town Police station in Bolangir.

Following the complaint, the police picked up Qureshi and his family and detained them at the police station overnight for questioning.

The bride’s family has demanded Rs 5 lakh from the Qureshi’s as the reimbursement of money spent on the wedding feast and other arrangements.

While a probe has been launched by the Bolangir police in this connection, the police refused to comment on the incident.
