The Odisha government will provide houses in Bhubaneswar at affordable rates starting from Rs 14 lakh, Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced on Sunday during the Local Self-Governance Day celebrations.

Mahapatra said the initiative aims to make home ownership possible for families struggling with high property costs in the state capital, where prices often exceed Rs 1 crore.

In his address, the Minister pointed out that many families from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) are unable to buy houses in Bhubaneswar, and thus, the Odisha government has decided to construct and provide affordable houses for them.

In the first phase, the scheme will focus on EWS beneficiaries. Over time, it will be extended to include families in the Middle-Income Group (MIG) as well. The price range of the new houses will vary between Rs 14 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, the minister added.

Greater Bhubaneswar Initiative

Notably, the housing projects will be implemented under the ‘Greater Bhubaneswar and Better Bhubaneswar’ initiative.

The state government plans to roll out the scheme through the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and the Odisha State Housing Board, with construction taken up in multiple phases to meet rising demand.

Progress So Far

On August 21, Mahapatra had confirmed that construction had already started at several sites in Bhubaneswar, with the first batch of houses to be handed over soon. Under that initiative, the government had decided on Rs 15 lakh and Rs 50 lakh and allocated them via a lottery system.

As per reports, the Housing and Urban Development Department is executing the scheme under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with tenders floated. Authorities have also indicated that once the Bhubaneswar projects are underway, similar housing schemes will be extended to other urban local bodies (ULBs) and growing cities across Odisha.
