The Odisha government is reportedly preparing to tighten security across all known ‘lovers' points’ in the state following public outrage over the alleged gangrape of a young woman at Gopalpur beach.

The administration has indicated that plans in this regard are moving forward with full steam, especially after the Gopalpur incident triggered an urgent reassessment of safety measures at secluded tourist locations, especially those frequented by young couples.

In an interaction with media persons, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who also holds the Tourism and Women & Child Development portfolios, said that multiple high-level meetings have already been conducted to develop a comprehensive security framework for such locations across Odisha.

“The government has already conducted two meetings and is discussing plans to beef up security at tourist spots frequented by couples. This will ensure that perpetrators of crime are checked long before they can commit such acts,” stated the Dy CM.

While Gopalpur beach has remained a key attraction in southern Odisha, the recent crime has spotlighted the vulnerability of so-called lovers' points, often situated in isolated stretches of popular tourist sites.

As such, the government has now placed all such romantic and recreational spots under priority security review.

Parida confirmed that the state has initiated steps to identify all such areas and implement enhanced safety protocols, which may include round-the-clock police patrolling, better illumination, CCTV surveillance, and community policing. These measures aim to prevent future assaults and ensure a safe environment for couples and tourists alike.

Swift Action in Gopalpur Case

In the Gopalpur incident, all accused were arrested within hours, marking what officials called a rare instance of immediate police response. The suspects were produced in an identification parade (TI parade), and legal proceedings are now underway.

The Deputy CM emphasised that the law is functioning without delay and the state is committed to delivering justice swiftly. The response is also being seen as a message to deter future criminal attempts in sensitive tourist zones.
