Odisha govt pushes for 1,635 new revenue villages with fresh mapping

The Odisha government is all set to carry out a large-scale restructuring of revenue village boundaries, with 1,635 new revenue villages to be notified soon. The Revenue and Disaster Management Department has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure that the new village boundaries are clearly demarcated and do not overlap with old ones.

As per the SOP, district collectors, RDCs, and the Director of Land Records and Survey have been directed to expedite the preparation of updated village maps and land records. Each of the newly created revenue villages will have separate land records, plot numbers, and village accounts to maintain data integrity and prevent overlap with previous records.

The move comes after repeated public demands and recommendations from collectors and settlement officers across districts. Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue Department, in a letter, stated that while only around 1,000 villages were declared revenue villages between 1991 and 2024, maps for only 300 were prepared by the previous government. The mapping for the remaining 700 villages remained incomplete.

Now, the state government aims to prepare maps for both the pending 700 villages and the newly added ones, totaling 1,635 revenue villages. To ensure smooth implementation, the Revenue Minister has announced the formation of dedicated mapping cells in each tehsil.

This comprehensive mapping and boundary redefinition exercise is expected to bring administrative clarity and facilitate effective governance in newly formed and restructured revenue villages.
