Odisha government forms high-level committee to tackle Kotia dispute

The Odisha government has intensified efforts to resolve the long-standing Kotia border dispute in Koraput district by forming a high-level committee under the leadership of the Revenue Department. The decision was taken during a crucial review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

The meeting saw the participation of key cabinet ministers, including those from the Higher Education, Law, and Revenue departments, along with the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police.

A Historical Dispute

The Kotia dispute, involving contested claims between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh over the Kotia cluster of villages, has persisted since 1920.

Despite its historical significance, successive governments have failed to reach a lasting resolution. The lack of consistent administrative presence and development in the region has worsened the issue over time.

New Committee with Diverse Expertise

To address this, a committee comprising officials from various departments and subject matter experts familiar with Kotia’s geopolitical complexities will be established.

The committee’s mandate includes field visits, data collection, and continuous monitoring of the situation. A final list of members is expected to be submitted to the Chief Minister within 15 days.

Government Focus on Border Security and Services

The committee will also work to counteract economic incentives being offered by the Andhra Pradesh government to residents in the area.

Odisha aims to ensure that state and central welfare schemes reach every corner of the border region, preventing external influence and reinforcing administrative presence.

Following its formation, the committee will conduct field assessments to gain ground-level insights and recommend actionable measures to secure Odisha’s territorial integrity in Kotia.
