Odisha flood: Breach in Kani river embankment inundates 15 panchayats in Jajpur, thousands displaced
A breach in the embankment of the Kani river in Jajpur district has led to widespread flooding, plunging at least 15 panchayats into crisis, including Mallikapur, Kasapa, Mahantipatana, Duduraanta, Susua, Nizampur and Khananagar.
According to officials, the situation may worsen further, with fears that up to 19 panchayats could eventually be affected if the water continues to spread.
In the worst-hit Ahiyaas and Kasapa villages, nearly 5,000 people have been rendered homeless. The displaced families have been shifted to nearby school buildings and other designated shelters, where arrangements for cooked food have been made.
To step up rescue and relief operations, three ODRAF teams and two Fire Services units have been deployed in the affected areas. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, even as locals expressed concerns over the safety of embankments in the adjoining regions.
With floodwaters inundating farmlands and residential areas alike, villagers are struggling to save both their households and livestock. The administration has assured that all necessary relief measures are being taken on a war footing.
