Mango is the national fruit of India. More than 1,200 varieties of mango are commonly grown across the country. Almost everybody like the luscious fruit especially produced in the summer season. Well, the price of mango differs with varieties. However, a farmer in Padmapur area in Bargarh district is growing a special variety of mango in his orchard which costs a staggering Rs 2 lakh per kg.

Meet Chandrababu Satyanarayan from Niladhar village under Paikmal block. He has been growing different breeds of mangoes on his farmland. However, Miyazaki variety, which is originally of Japanese breed and Icebox variety, has huge demand in foreign countries.

The colourful mango is not only attractive to watch, but also has a unique taste. The fruit is known for its unique flavor and it is different from other mango varieties. Miyazaki mango is high in vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants. It helps protect the body against disease and promote overall health. It also contains dietary fiber, potassium, and magnesium.

“Last year we had got a call from Bangalore and they bought two mangoes with Rs 10,000 each. We also sold four-five fruits locally. Horticulture officials advised us to create more Miyazaki plants by grafting from the mother plant,” said Chandrababu.

Chandrababu was doing paddy cultivation for years with little success. However, he has switched over to fruit farming of late. He is making good profit by growing different varieties of mangoes and other fruits. Chandrababu’s son Saibabu is also helping him in the farming. It has inspired many farmers in the area to switch over from paddy cultivation to fruits farming.

“We were not getting much profit from paddy cultivation. However, after switching to fruits farming, we are making good profit with equal effort,” said Saibabu.
