The Odisha government authorised police inspectors and sub-inspectors to investigate cases registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, according to an official notification.
Until now, only officers holding the rank of deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and above were permitted to carry out investigations, prosecute cases, and make arrests under the provisions of the Act. The latest directive marks a shift by extending such powers to lower-rank officers.
The notification, issued on Saturday, clarified that inspectors and sub-inspectors may now exercise their authority before any special court designated under the Act, provided the cases fall within their respective territorial jurisdictions.
According to the government, the decision is aimed at enhancing responsiveness and expediting legal proceedings in matters related to atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The step is expected to strengthen the mechanism for faster redressal of complaints and improve access to justice for affected communities.
