Odisha CM visits AIIMS amid FM College self-immolation outcry, promises stringent action
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday returned from his Delhi visit and headed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar to review the medical condition of the female student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Balasore, who attempted self-immolation on Saturday.
The CM assured that strict action will be taken following the inquiry report, and that the government will prioritise eliminating harassment and ragging in educational institutions across the state.
CM Says Incident Under Serious Scrutiny
Speaking to the press after landing at Biju Patnaik International Airport, CM Majhi said, “The government has taken all the necessary steps and formed task forces to hold those responsible for this incident. I am personally heading to AIIMS to take stock of the health condition of the victim.”
He further said, “An investigation has begun into how this entire incident unfolded. A report will come soon, and actions will be taken accordingly. Going forward, prevention of cases of ragging and sexual harassment in colleges and technical institutions will be a prime focus for our government.”
Earlier in the day, Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj also visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where they interacted with the family members of the victim and the medical team.
Student’s Condition Remains Critical; AIIMS Panel Formed
The student, who set herself ablaze outside the college principal’s chamber, continues to remain on ventilator support. Doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar informed that she has sustained 90–95% burn injuries, affecting her kidneys and respiratory system.
AIIMS Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas confirmed that the next 24–48 hours are vital, with no significant improvement observed so far.
In view of her critical state, an eight-member medical panel comprising specialists from critical care, nephrology, surgery, pulmonology, and anaesthesia has been formed at AIIMS for round-the-clock monitoring.
Political Storm: Naveen Patnaik Writes to Governor
The incident has triggered a sharp political response, with Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik writing to Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, urging his direct intervention. As Chancellor of state universities, the Governor has been requested to ensure institutional accountability.
Meanwhile, Opposition BJD and Congress workers hit the streets in Bhubaneswar, protesting alleged inaction by the government in ensuring swift justice and safety at colleges across the state.
