Odisha Cabinet approves DRIP III; additional spillway of Hirakud dam to be constructed

Odisha Cabinet approved DRIP III with Rs 1066.38 crore for six years, aided by World Bank and AIIB. CM Mohan Majhi announced an additional spillway for Hirakud dam to enhance flood safety.

In a major decision, the Odisha Cabinet has approved 11 projects including three projects which will be implemented under Dam Rehabilitation & Improvement Project-III.

The DRIP III will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 1066.38 crore over a period of 6 years and will be implemented with assistance from World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) funded under Externally Aided Project.

Sharing details, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi on Saturday informed that additional spillway of Hirakud dam will be constructed. This will ensure safe passage of additional flood water.

Similarly, the work for underwater, ground and aerial survey of distressed conditions of Hirakud dam and its rehabilitation measures will be taken up. Automation of existing gates and proposed additional spillway gates of Hirakud Dam by using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system will also be done.

The underwater, ground and aerial survey of distressed conditions, analysis with selection of state-of-art modern materials for rehabilitation measures using modern machineries and equipment and its videography will reportedly enhance the longevity of the Hirakud dam. 

Replacement of manual gate operation with remote operation system using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) through DRIP-III under the supervision of national and international experts will help better control and monitoring, the Chief Minister added.
