Popular music director and composer Swarup Nayak passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack on Friday. He was battling cancer for the past several years, sources said.

Nayak was popular for his contribution to the Odia film industry. His popular works and film credits include I Love You, and Pua Mora Bhola Shankar. Since the 80’s, Nayak has been active in Ollywood and carved a niche for himself in the industry.

Apart from composing and music direction, he also acted in some films. Nayak created a sensation with his versatility which was also reflected in films like Premi No.1 and I Love You.

Nayak was also instrumental in helping several actors, especially the debutants to create a different fan base, through his songs.

Music director, Premanand said, “It is shocking news for all of us. I had spoken with him when he was undergoing treatment. He was not only a music director, he was a good composer and actor as well. He had also introduced several singers and actors. His contribution to the film industry is immense.”

Senior Journalist, Pradeep Sahu said, "It is a personal loss for me and the people of Odisha. Swarup Nayak started his career as a child artist. He was the brother of legendary actor and director Parbati Ghose.”

Sahu further said that Swarup Nayak was multi-talented and acted in Odia films. He shared a close relationship with Prashant Nanda, Sahu added. 

Odisha Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik condoled the death of Swarup Nayak and said; “I am saddened to know about the demise of Swarup Nayak. His unique music compositions will always remain special in the hearts of the listeners. He will be remembered forever for his valuable contribution to enriching the world of Odia cinema.”

BJP National Vice-President Baijayant Panda expressed grief over the demise of Swarup Nayak.

“I am saddened to hear about the demise of Swarup Nayak. He was a famous musician, actor, lyricist and singer. He will forever be remembered for his unique contribution to Odia cinema,” posted Panda on his X handle.

Swarup Nayak weaved magic with a song when he was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement award by the Tarang Cine Productions.

Actor Sritam Das said, “I grew up seeing Swarup Nayak and he had a weakness for food. He was very fun-loving and lively. He was a very good human being. He loved his work, music, and acting. He was an institution himself.”

As per the statement from the CMO, Swarup Nayak will be cremated with full state honours at the Satichaura crematorium in Cuttack.
