A nurse was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside the bathroom of a private hospital in the Chandrasekharpur area of Bhubaneswar on Friday, triggering shock among colleagues and patients. The deceased has been identified as Sonali Rout, a native of Ganjam district.

According to sources, Rout was on duty at the hospital when she failed to return to her station. Staff members, after noticing her absence, checked the premises and found her lying unresponsive inside the staff bathroom. She was declared dead shortly thereafter.

Police officials from Chandrasekharpur Police Station reached the spot soon after being informed and initiated an investigation. While the exact cause of death remains unclear, authorities said a post-mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain whether foul play was involved.

Family demands probe

Family members, including Rout’s mother, expressed disbelief over her sudden death, alleging that she was in good health and had no known medical complications. They have urged police to probe the circumstances leading up to the incident, especially since it occurred during her shift.

"My daughter had gone to the washroom at around 1:30 pm. She reportedly slipped, fell, and became unconscious. They (the hospital) called us at 3:30 pm and informed us that our daughter had fallen unconscious. We reached there only to find her dead body in front of us," said the deceased nurse’s mother.

As of the latest reports, investigators are examining CCTV footage from the hospital and questioning staff members to piece together the sequence of events. Senior police officials have indicated that all angles, including accidental death, health-related causes, and possible foul play, are being explored.
