The Odisha Legislative Assembly on Thursday formally issued a notification for election to three Rajya Sabha seats that will fall vacant in the state in April.
It is pertinent to mention here that the election will be conducted for three Rajya Sabha seats in Odisha held by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Prashanta Nanda, and Amar Patnaik, whose terms end on April 3, 2024.
On January 29 last year, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that 56 seats of Rajya Sabha from 15 states, including Odisha will go to polls on February 27.
As per available information, the term of office for 50 Rajya Sabha members from 13 states is set to conclude on April 2, while the remaining six members from two states are due to retire on April 3.
As per the notification issued today, the last date for filing nomination papers by candidates is February 15, 2024.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on February 16. The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers on February 20. The voting will be conducted from 9 am to 4 pm on February 27 and the counting of votes will begin from 5 pm on the same day.
As far as the numbers are concerned, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has the majority.
