No power cuts during summer in Odisha even if there are outstanding electricity bills

In a significant relief to citizens battling the soaring summer heat, Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister KV Singh Deo on Tuesday issued a clear directive to the state power distribution companies that no power cuts are to be carried out during the ongoing heatwave period, even in cases of unpaid electricity bills.

Addressing the media, Singh Deo emphasized that the Odisha government is prioritizing public convenience and health amid the intense summer conditions.

“There should be no power disconnections during the summer, even if there are outstanding electricity bills. People should not suffer in this heat,” he stated firmly.

However, he clarified that this is a temporary relief, not an exemption from payment.

"Consumers are still expected to pay their pending dues. Electricity supply will not be interrupted immediately, but users must settle their arrears in due course,” he said.

Power Restoration Takes Time During Kalbaisakhi

The minister further assured that despite seasonal disruptions such as Nor’westers (kalbaishakhi) affecting power infrastructure, swift restoration measures are being taken.

"Even if power services are impacted due to sudden summer storms, efforts are being made to restore supply as quickly as possible," he added.

This proactive move comes at a time when many regions in the state are recording high temperatures and are bracing for both heat waves and pre-monsoon storms. The government’s decision aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply for homes, healthcare facilities, and essential services.

Public response to the announcement has been largely positive, with many welcoming the humane approach of the government during one of the harshest summers in recent years.

However, people allege that power cuts are happening in different parts of Odisha. There are also reports of demonstrations and resentment over unscheduled power cuts in some pockets of the state.
