In a bid to curb traffic violators, particularly red-light jumpers, the Bhubaneswar Traffic Police has launched a special drive to act tough on them.

From now on, commuters jumping any traffic signal in the Smart City will not only lose their driving license for three months, but also get forwarded to court.

Speaking about the drive, Bhubaneswar Traffic DCP PK Rout said, “We are conducting this drive at AG square, Laxmisagar square, Jaydev Vihar square and Khandagiri square in the first phase. Our focus in this drive is on red-light jumpers.”

“We will seize the vehicle, the driving licence of the driver and forward them to the court. We will then send the seized driving licence to the RTO to suspend it for three months according to the law,” Rout said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police has been conducting traffic sensitisation drives from time to time to curb the violators.

As per the Odisha government data, the Commissionerate police collected Rs 186.04 crore from 18.5 lakh people for violating traffic rules in three years (2020-22).
