At a time when several parts of Odisha were staring at a drought-like situation owing to deficient rainfall, things are likely to improve following incessant rainfall in the past few days.

"The recent rains, which have been continuing for the last five days, have helped a lot to fill up for the deficit and allaying the drought fear," said Odisha Agriculture Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain while speaking to the reporters at Krishi Bhavan following a meeting with the department officials.

However, the rains need to continue in July as it will ensure the farmers to yield a good crop this season, the Minister said.

“By God’s grace, almost all districts have received rainfall. Had it not rained for another five or so days, then we would likely to have faced a drought situation,” said Swain.

“Rainfall has definitely improved the situation in some districts. Our seed and input supply is good. We have a slight shortage of fertiliser and we have already written to the Government of India. So the overall situation is fast improving,” he added.

has predicted normal rainfall for the month of July. If it actually happens, then our Kharif crop will be successful this year,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued rainfall activities for several districts in the state till July 20.
