The Ministry of Education on Thursday released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, the 10th edition of the annual assessment of higher education institutions across India. As in previous years, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has maintained its dominance, clinching the first position in the engineering category for the seventh consecutive time.
IISc Bengaluru has been ranked second overall, while IIT Bombay secured the third spot. IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur were placed fourth and fifth, followed by IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee at sixth and seventh respectively.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, emerged as the only medical institution to feature in the top 10, claiming the eighth rank. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, completed the list in ninth and tenth place.
Once again, the IITs dominated the rankings, taking nine of the top 10 slots. The NIRF, first launched in 2015, evaluates institutions across diverse categories such as engineering, management, medicine, law, universities, and overall performance. Last year, new segments like state and open universities were also added.
As per the NIRF Ranking 2025, the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, secured 34th position.
