The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report (ATR) from the District Collector and Superintendent of Police of Sundargarh in connection with the recent incident of two women, mother-daughter, walking naked on a busy street.

Acting on a petition filed by advocate and human rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy, the rights body has asked the Collector and SP to submit the report within four weeks.

Tripathy had filed the complaint with the NHRC on October 6 highlighting the incident of the mother-daughter duo aged about 27 and 45 walking naked on College Road, which is one of the busiest roads in Sundargarh town.

Sundargarh BJP MLA Kusum Tete, who was passing through the road, had rescued them. Subsequently, they returned to their native place after spending some days at an Astha Gruha in Sundargarh.

In his petition, Tripathy had requested the NHRC to investigate the case and take immediate measures to rehabilitate them with compensation and benefits of welfare schemes.

"The copy of instant proceeding be forwarded to the Chief Secretary and DGP, Govt. of Odisha for information and for ensuring compliance of direction of the Commission by aforesaid authorities," the NHRC stated in its order.

"Let a copy of the complaint be also transmitted to the Secretary of the concerned State Human Rights Commission, calling upon him to inform this Commission the date of cognizance, if any, taken at their end in the instant matter within four weeks," the order of the NHRC added.
