Hours after a girl student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla in Sambalpur district went missing, her body was recovered from the power channel on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Chinmayi Priyadarshini Sahoo.

Though initially it was alleged that Chinmayi died after reportedly jumping off Power Channel Bridge on Tuesday night, the entire incident took a new turn today after the family members alleged some foul play in the incident.

The mother of the deceased student alleged that, “Chinmayi was strangulated to death as there are some marks on her neck region.”

According to deceased Chinmayi’s mother, she had spoken with her daughter at around 9: 20 pm as she was supposed to return to Bhubaneswar in a bus after attending her convocation yesterday.

“When I called Chimayi, her voice sounded weird. I initially thought it to be some cross connection but  heard the same sound when I called her again for the second time,” Chinmay’'s mother said.

Deceased Chinmayi’s father, who happens to be a doctor said, “My daughter was very strong mentally. She cannot die by suicide. Rather she has been killed.”

Chinmayi was a student of the Information Technology department of the varsity. She attended the university’s convocation programme on February 28 and received her degree.

Chinmayi’s family suspect the involvement of a male friend behind her mysterious death.

Initially, the Registrar of the University had lodged a complaint with police regarding the disappearance of Chinmayi in the power channel yesterday.

“The registrar had informed about the student falling into the power channel. Based on the complaint, we had launched a search operation last night and recovered her body today,” said Burla SDPO, Satyabrata Das.

VSSUT Vice-Chancellor, Bansidhar Majhi said, “The convocation was held for the 2022 batch and it was around 10 pm that I got information about the incident and subsequently visited the spot.”

Meanwhile, police have detained Chinmayi’s friend and further investigation in this connection is underway.

The father of Chinmayi’s male friend said, “Both Chinmayi and my son were friends. I have no idea about the intimacy of their relationship.”

Later in the day, Police registered a murder case against two persons including a batchmate based on the complaint filed by the victim's mother.
