With the current Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha Sunil Bansal all set to retire in just two days and the 2024 General Elections approaching, it has become a challenge for the State government to appoint an appropriate and competent IPS officer to the coveted post.

Speculations and rumour mills are abuzz with several names gunning for the DGP post which includes 89 batch IPS officers B Radhika and Amrit Mohan Prasad, 90 batch IPS officers Arun Sarangi and YB Khurania.

As per reports, 1988-batch senior IPS officer Manoj Chhabra will not be considered for the post as he will retire this month. The same batch senior IPS officer Arun Ray is now working as OSD of the Home Department. There is a probability that he may be appointed as the new DGP. However, the State government is not reportedly satisfied with his performance.

However, the Odisha government is yet to discuss the appointment with the UPSC. So, it is speculated that the government may make someone DGP In-charge for an interim period.

Former Odisha Police DG, Sanjeev Marik said, “Arun Sarangi has been given another department. Even Amrit Mohan Prasad is posted in another department. B Radhika, Khurania are in the police department. The government will appoint one out of these officers whoever it deems fit for the job.”

Senior journalist Akshay Sahu said, “Odisha government may play a surprise card for the DGP post. The government may bring a woman officer too. Whoever is appointed as the DGP, he or she must be in the good books of the government. There are some Odia officers too who helped the government get out of tricky situations in the past. They might be considered by the government too.”
