In a major breakthrough, the Crime Branch of Odisha police on Thursday recovered a dozen handwritten letters thrown into the septic tank of the Jharsuguda airport police station by accused Gopal Krushna Das.

Das has been arrested for firing at minister Naba Das leading to his death.

After a tiring night of digging the septic tank, cops have managed to recover the handwritten letters of accused Gopal Das. Police have recovered at least 12 letters from the sewage tank. The letters have been written with red ink in both English and Odia, reports said.

However, the letters are drenched and not in readable condition. Most of them are torn. During interrogation by Crime Branch officials, Gopal admitted to writing the letters and throwing them into the toilet of Jharsuguda airport police station.

After the explosive revelation, a team of police along with sewage workers dug out the septic tank at the police station on Wednesday night.

ADG Arun Bothra, Sambalpur IG Arun Kumar and newly-appointed Jharsuguda SP were present during the process, reports said.

Police suspect Gopal had written the motive behind his murder in the letters. He had allegedly kept them in his pocket as he feared the mob would thrash him to death if he was caught. However, cops managed to overpower him and took him to Jharsuguda airport police station. There, Gopal went to the bathroom in the police station and flashed away all the letters.

The Crime Branch has taken Gopal on a four-day remand for interrogation and further investigation in the case.
