Monkeys
Monkeys are among the most social animals in the wild, living in groups called troops where each member plays a vital role in protection and harmony. Much like humans, they too display emotions such as affection, anger, and grief. One such incident reflected the emotional side of monkeys when a tragic and emotional scene unfolded in the Korei area of Jajpur district, where a troop of monkeys gathered to mourn the death of one of their companions killed in a road accident.
According to reports, the incident occurred near the Korei Block Office, when a monkey attempting to cross the road was fatally hit by an SUV (Bolero) vehicle. The impact was so severe that the monkey died instantly.
Within minutes, dozens of monkeys descended from nearby trees and surrounded the body. In an extraordinary act of loyalty, they sat on the road, refused to let vehicles or pedestrians pass, and repeatedly attempted to lift the lifeless body. The rare sight left locals deeply touched, many pausing to watch the grieving troop.
On being informed, Korei Police Station Officer Rakesh Tripathy rushed to the spot and arranged for the respectful disposal of the body. Under his supervision, local youths carried out the final rites with dignity.
The heart-touching behaviour of the monkeys has since become the talk of the region, with residents describing it as a poignant reminder of the deep emotional bonds animals share, often mirroring human grief and solidarity.
