The bodies of a couple were recovered from a canal near Panchubati village under Sadar police limits in Dhenkanal district on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Dusashan Sahu, a retired havildar and his wife Padmavati Sahu, of Panchubati village. While Dusashan’s body was fished out from the canal on Wednesday evening, his wife’s body was recovered on Thursday morning.

According to a source, the couple had gone missing since Wednesday morning. The couple’s son had lodged a missing complaint at the Sadar police station. In his complaint, he said his parents had gone to the canal to take a bath and never returned.

When some villagers spotted the body of Dusashan floating in canal water, they immediately informed other villagers who rushed to the spot, rescued the body and took it to the Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Today morning, fire personnel launched an operation in the canal and fished out the body of Padmavati.

While it is yet to be ascertained what circumstances led to the death of the couple, the police have launched a detailed probe.
