A businessman sustained grievous injuries after unidentified miscreants wearing masks attacked him over an extortion bid in Odisha’s Kendapara district. The incident occurred while the businessman was sitting at the cash counter of his garments store.

The miscreants attacked him using huge wooden sticks, leaving him critically injured. The victim has been identified as Mir Khadim, the owner of a garment store. Based on a complaint by the family members of the victim, police registered a case and launched a probe into the incident.

One of the accused has been detained while efforts are on to nab the other accused who are currently absconding.

According to sources, the miscreants had earlier made threatening calls to the businessman and demanded Rs 10 lakh from him. However, when he refused to give them the extortion money, they attacked him in a group.

From the shop's CCTV footage, the miscreants can be seen rushing towards the cloth store with huge sticks. Wearing money caps to hide their faces, they attacked the businessman who was sitting at the cash counter. They also vandalised the store before fleeing the spot.

Cops are examining the CCTV footage to identify the miscreants involved in the incident.
