Millet scam in Odisha: Koraput tribal beneficiaries yet to receive even a single grain

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Hundreds of tribal villagers in Kutrabeda, Koraput, allege a millet distribution scam under government schemes, with no grains reaching them despite signed receipts. Officials deny claims, promising investigations.

Slips issued, millets not distributed

In a shocking revelation from Kutrabeda village under Bandhugaon block of Koraput district, hundreds of poor tribal villagers have alleged widespread corruption in the distribution of millet, a nutrient-rich grain provided under government welfare schemes.

Despite the Odisha government dispatching regular supplies meant for impoverished families, the grains allegedly never reached the intended beneficiaries. Instead, officials allegedly siphoned off the rations month after month.

Villagers like Pralhad Saraka, Adana Saraka, and Bhaskarao Saraka claimed they had signed for the Mandia and even received receipts, but not a single grain was delivered.

The control dealer repeatedly dodged them with excuses, despite records showing the distribution had been completed. Locals now say the scam is not limited to millets alone as similar allegations had previously surfaced regarding rice distribution in the same panchayat.

"What happened to our millets? We signed, but we never got it. Where is it going?" asked frustrated Saraka, questioning how such fraud could continue for months without detection.

“They told us to supply later. We do not know why they are not giving us the ration,” said Adana.

Bhaskarao said, “The biometrics have been taken and villagers are yet to get the supply even though receipts have been issued.”

The scale of the scam has raised serious concerns about administrative lapses and the possible involvement of officials responsible for distribution. Many suspect collusion between grassroots-level officials and dealers, as this kind of fraud is impossible without internal cooperation.

While Kutrabeda Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) Ramachandra Meleka denied all allegations, Bandhugaon BDO Meenati Jagdev assured that a detailed investigation would be conducted to unearth the truth and take appropriate action.

“Whatever amount was sanctioned, it did not arrive for which we could not supply to some. Everything is done in online mode. Hence, we are issuing slips,” said the PEO, assuring, “I will personally investigate the matter.”
