In a significant move that aims to revive and strengthen Odia Asmita and cultural pride, the iconic "Master Canteen" Square in Bhubaneswar is likely to undergo a name change. This was officially hinted at by the Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Saturday. He emphasized the importance of giving prominence to regional heritage over colonial-era names.

The minister stated that discussions are currently underway regarding the renaming of several prominent places in Odisha that still carry names from the British era.

"The time has come to shed remnants of colonial influence and embrace names that reflect our own roots and legacy," he said during a press interaction.

Master Canteen, located in the heart of Bhubaneswar near the railway station, is not only a landmark but also a vital commercial and transit hub. Despite its historical relevance, the name is a vestige of colonial administration, and there is a growing demand from citizens and cultural organizations to rename such places with more locally meaningful identities.

The minister further suggested that if the name of Master Canteen is changed, it would likely be in honour of one of Odisha’s great sons. However, he clarified that the final decision on the new name will rest with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, who will consider public sentiment and expert consultations before approving the renaming.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the new state government to reclaim Odisha’s cultural narrative and prioritize Odia language, history, and icons in public life. While the proposal is still in the deliberation phase, it has already sparked interest and debate among Bhubaneswar’s citizens.

Many are supporting the move, saying it's high time public spaces reflected the state’s heritage. Others, however, feel a balanced approach is necessary, considering the identity and familiarity already attached to such iconic places.
