Fire mishap at MKCG hospital
A major fire incident was reported at the disease diagnosis centre of MKCG MCH in Berhampur. The fire reportedly caused after one of the AC units short circuited around 2 am on Sunday night.
The blaze, suspected to have been caused by some mechanical issue in the AC, spread through the main laboratory of the biochemistry department located right below the Diagnostic Centre. The Centre sees a massive crowd of patients daily, has been badly affected by the incident.
The fire particularly gutted the biochemical section and the main laboratory, causing large-scale damage. Various chemical substances of the biochemistry department were burnt to ashes, while several flammable chemicals and testing equipment were also damaged. The fire brigade rushed to the spot and attempted to control the flames.
Blood sample tests have been affected, creating a disruption in patient care due to the fire. Allegations have surfaced that problems have arisen in various tests of patients following the mishap.
The incident has raised questions about whether the fire extinguishing systems at the hospital were functional or not.
As per reports, AC units not being maintained properly are becoming prone to short circuits. In recent times, fire mishaps were reported from the gynaecology ward and the super speciality block of MKCG due to electrical short circuit. These repeated mishaps are putting the lives of employees and patients at constant risk.
The extent of damage is currently under investigation. No reaction could be obtained from the hospital authorities in this regard.
