Authorities in Balasore launched a crackdown on illegal sand trafficking to West Bengal, forcing drivers to abandon over 50 trucks on NH-60 in Jaleswar. The late-night raid continued till morning.

The authorities in Balasore have intensified crackdown on the illegal sand trafficking allegedly to the neighbouring West Bengal. Following the massive operation, drivers of over 50 trucks laden with sand have abandoned the vehicles alongside the National Highway No 60 in Jaleswar area.

It is suspected that the drivers reportedly abandoned their vehicles and absconded upon noticing the presence of administrative officials. 

Late Night Operation Extends Till Morning

The raid commenced late last night and continued into the early morning hours, resulting in the detention of numerous vehicles. All impounded lorries will be taken to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for further action, sources said.

“We are camping in the area from last night. It is an important passage and most of the vehicles are now unable to pass through this. If they do not produce relevant documents, we will write to different authorities like the mining and transport department so that appropriate legal action can be taken against them,” said Jaleswar Tehsildar, Satyajit Mohanty.

Wider Crackdown on Illegal Activities

This intervention is perceived as part of broader efforts to tackle the growing issue of illegal sand trading in the region. Such activities not only pose a threat to local ecosystems but also impact regional economies and infrastructures in Odisha.
