Maoist ultras gunned down a 48-year-old man from Panchakul village under Sadar police limits in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi on Thursday night suspecting him to be a police informer.

The deceased has been identified as Lalabati Majhi.

In a poster recovered from the spot, the Baghuna division of CPI (Maoists) has taken the responsibility for the killing. They have also threatened to deal with other existing police informers in the area in the same manner. 

Meanwhile, the police have started investigating the incident. A combing operation has been launched to nab the wanted Maoists.

On Thursday, two women Maoists were killed during an exchange of fire with the security forces in the Gandhamardan Hills region of Bolangir district.

The security forces neutralised two women Maoists after a gun battle of half an hour. Both neutralised Maoists were carrying a bounty of 4 lakh rupees each on their head.

In a media briefing about the encounter, the Odisha DGP Sunil Bansal said: "Based on a very specific intelligence input about the presence of Maoists in Bolangir and Bargarh area, we had launched an operation on Wednesday midnight.”
