Maoist insurgents clash with security forces in Odisha forest during combing operation
A confrontation between security personnel and Maoist rebels has intensified Bolangir’s Gandhamardhan hills. The firefight emerged in the forested area surrounding Hanupali village, located within the Bhanupur Panchayat on Friday morning.
This comes as the authorities initiated combing operations following credible tips about the presence of Maoist elements hiding in the area. The confrontation saw an exchange of heavy gunfire as security forces moved into position after receiving intelligence reports. It has been alleged that Maoists opened fire first, leading to an intense standoff.
The security forces are actively engaged in continuing their efforts to neutralise this insurgent threat and secure the region to safeguard local residents. The situation remains precarious as the combing operations proceed, with efforts focused on capturing the insurgents and restoring calm.
The locality, known for its geographic prominence, has often been a focal point for Maoist activities, posing recurring challenges for the state’s security apparatus. This operation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in containing the Maoist insurgency within Odisha.
Report of any casualties is being awaited until the announcement.
The Gandhamardhan hills in Bolangir district, where the recent clash occurred, have been a known hotspot for Maoist activities. In February 2019, security forces busted a Maoist camp in this area during a combing operation. The region's challenging terrain and strategic location continue to pose difficulties for security forces in their counter-insurgency efforts.
Additionally, the Odisha government has taken precautionary measures in other Maoist-affected areas. In October 2024, Bolangir police advised an Odia film crew against shooting in the Maoist-infested Khuripani and Sapamunda areas, citing security risks. These incidents highlight the persistent challenges faced by security agencies in containing the Maoist insurgency within Odisha.
