Mango kernel tragedy: 1 more dies while undergoing treatment in SCBMCH

Jita Majhi from Mandipanka village died at SCBMCH due to mango kernel poisoning, raising the toll to three. Another patient remains critical. The tragedy had previously occurred in Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district.

A patient, who had previously fallen sick after consuming gruel prepared from mango kernel and was undergoing treatment, died on Monday at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

With this, the total number of deaths due to mango kernel poisoning reached three.

The deceased was identified as Jita Majhi, who belonged to Mandipanka village.

According to sources, Jita Majhi including another person was brought from MKCGMCH to SCBMCH for treatment, after their health condition deteriorated. The second patient is undergoing treatment at the health facility and is in critical condition.

“In spite of all our efforts, we could not save Jita Majhi, the victim of mango kernel poisoning, who was undergoing hemodialysis with ventilator support. She passed away today at around 2:15 PM in ICU of Medicine Ward,” the hospital authorities said in a release.

Worth mentioning, two tribal women had earlier died in MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MKCGMCH) in Berhampur, following the incident.
The two tribal women allegedly died after consuming gruel prepared from mango kernels at Mandipanka village under the Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district. Six others, who had consumed kernel, were also taken critically ill.

On November 7, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) and BJD supremo, Naveen Patnaik targeted the Odisha government over the alleged death of two women.
