Police detained a man on Sunday for allegedly killing his wife who was a teacher for Rs 80 lakh at Champatipur village under Itamati police station in Nayagarh district.

While the deceased has been identified as Padmini Pradhan, the accused has been identified as Tapan Swain.

As per the allegation by the deceased's family members, Tapan had asked Padmini for Rs 80 lakh to buy a vehicle. However, Padmini expressed her helplessness to give him such a huge amount of money. The incident led to a quarrel between the couple. Later, Padmini's body was recovered from the house.

Subsequently, the deceased's family members lodged an FIR alleging that the in-laws had killed her. Based on the complaint, Itamati police detained Tapan for interrogation. The in-laws of the deceased are reportedly on the run.

Further investigation into the case is underway.

"Based on the complaint, we have registered a case in connection with the matter. We have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. We have also detained Tapan for interrogation and, along with a scientific team, launched a probe into the circumstances that led to Padmini’s death. Stern action will be taken against the culprit following the completion of the investigation," said Nayagarh SDPO Sudarshan Gangoi.
